Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bray (Wicklow) Road Construction.

Liz McManus

Question:

323 Ms McManus asked the Minister for the Environment when he will sanction the go-ahead for the Southern Cross Route in Bray, County Wicklow, in view of the urgent necessity to get the road built.

I recently approved contract documents for a 1.35 km section of this route which is to be constructed by Wicklow County Council and which, when linked to the section of road being provided by private developers, will connect the Bray/Greystones Road to the Killarney Road interchange on the Shankill/Bray By-Pass.

As the section of road concerned would not be a national road, arrangements for funding its construction are a matter in the first instance for the Council. They may use the discretionary block grant allocation available from my Department to supplement expenditure from their own resources on the project. It will also be open to the Council to seek a specific grant under arrangements I will be introducing for the allocation of the funds for the construction/improvement of non-national roads which are provided for in the National Development Plan and which are expected to qualify for partial recoupment from the EU. I envisage that local authorities will be invited to submit applications for such grants in respect of genuine and substantial improvement works which are important to the generation of economic activity and employment in industry, tourism, fisheries and forestry, or which promote rural development, including agriculture.
