Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Galway Water Supply.

Robert Molloy

Question:

324 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in granting approval for the preliminary report on the Inishmore water supply improvement scheme, Aran Islands, County Galway submitted by Galway County Council; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A preliminary report was received in my Department on 29 May 1992, for Phase 1, Stage 3 of the proposed Inishmore water supply scheme. Following examination of these proposals, Galway County Council was requested to submit a revised preliminary report which would more fully address the overall water supply requirements for the island in terms of treatment, sources and distribution.

The revised preliminary report was received on 30 April 1993. Additional technical information requested from Galway County Council was received in my Department on 24 September 1993, and the preliminary report was approved on 28 September 1993.

The construction of a reservoir and ancillary works will be carried out initially as an advance section of Phase 1. Galway County Council are currently preparing the necessary contract documents.
