Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Traffic Management Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

340 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to allocate any special funds to Kildare County Council for traffic management improvement at Celbridge, County Kildare; if he intends such funds to be made available to the local authority for the implementation of any part of the traffic management proposals previously submitted to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Roads Plan for Celbridge, which was submitted by Kildare County Council in August 1991, relates to non-national roads which are the responsibility of Kildare County Council. The work involved would therefore fall to be financed from the Council's own resources supplemented by the annual discretionary grants paid by my Department for such roads.

The level of discretionary grants for 1994 and the allocations to individual local authorities will be determined and notified as soon as possible. It will also be open to local authorities this year to seek specific grants for projects involving substantial improvement works and which contribute to employment and economic activity in, inter alia, industry and tourism. Guidelines for the nomination of projects for these grants will be issued to local authorities shortly.
