Question:

342 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Defence the boards, committees, companies or other bodies under the auspices of his Department; and, in each case, whether the Chairperson is male or female, the number of other members of the boards who are female and male and whether their Chief Executive or holder of an equivalent position is male or female.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 341 and 342 together.

The boards/bodies under the aegis of the Department of Defence are the Army Pensions Board, Coiste an Asgard and the Irish Red Cross Society. The statutory basis and current male/female composition of the management of these boards/bodies is as follows:

(1) Army Pensions Board

The Board was established pursuant to Section 5 of the Army Pensions Act, 1927 and consists of a chairperson who is male and two ordinary members, both of whom are female. The Board does not have a Chief Executive. The Secretary to the Board is female.
(2)Coiste an Asgard
Coiste an Asgard is a company limited by guarantee under the Companies Acts and is established for the management of the Sail Training Vessel Asgard II. The Coiste currently has a board of 14 Directors of whom 11 are male and 3 are female. The Chairperson is the Minister for Defence. There is no Chief Executive. The Secretary is male.
(3)Irish Red Cross Society
The Society was established pursuant to section 1 of the Red Cross Act 1938. It is an autonomous body which manages its affairs through its governing body, the Central Council. The Council consists of members elected by the Society's areas and members nominated by the Government. Of the total of 42 members, 27 are male and 15 are female. At present, 20 members are nominated by the Government and of these 11 are male and 9 are female. The Chairperson is female. The Society does not have a Chief Executive. The Secretary General is male.
