Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telifís na Gaeilge Transmission System.

Ivan Yates

Question:

500 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he will clarify details of the proposed transmission system for the new Irish television station; if this will interfere in any way with the reception to households with their own individual aerial, particularly in the eastern and north eastern parts of the country, where signals are being received for BBC and UTV; if he will ensure that those households receiving their reception through such an individual aerial will not be obliged to use the MMDS or cable systems in future; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In consultation with the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and RTE my Department is in the process of developing a transmission frequency plan for Telifís na Gaeilge. Although substantial progress has been made this work is not yet complete. While spectrum frequency space is a finite resource with many calls on its use I can assure the Deputy that frequency allocations made by my Department are painstakingly planned in detail to minimise the potential for interference with licensed broadcasters both here and in the UK. This equally applies to the off-air reception in Ireland from UK transmitters.
