Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Funding for MRI Scan.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

543 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Health when a decision will be made to provide funding for the MRI scan at University College Hospital, Galway.

The position is that Beaumont Hospital provides a national service in relation to MRI scans to hospitals in the public sector. The Unit in Beaumont has only recently been commissioned and arrangements have been made with all public hospital authorities for access to the Unit.

I am satisfied that, given the high cost of the introduction of MRI technology, that the existing arrangements are adequate for the present level of demand for the service. However, the service will be subject to ongoing review bearing in mind the competing demand for additional resources, and the level of resources which may become available for the enhancement of services, including radiological services.
