Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Admission.

John Bruton

Question:

86 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she will assume power to direct a second level school to accept a person (details supplied) in County Meath who is aged 16 and has been refused entry to all local second level schools even though he has a good academic record and is in no way disruptive.

I understand that the mother of the pupil concerned, who is over the age of compulsory education, is anxious to have him enrolled in a particular second-level school in County Meath which is operated by County Meath Vocational Education Committee. However, my Department has been informed by County Meath Vocational Education Committee that the school in question does not have a place at present for the pupil, who resides outside the catchment area of the school. His name has been placed on a waiting list and the school authorities have agreed to reconsider the position in relation to his admission in September, 1994.

In the meantime, my Department has been in touch with the principal of another school in the general area who is prepared to meet with the pupil and his mother to discuss the question of finding a place for him in that school. I am arranging for further details to be forwarded directly to the Deputy.
