Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Castleknock (Dublin) Postprimary School.

Austin Currie

Question:

91 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education when a non-fee paying second level school will be provided in the Castleknock area, Dublin 15, in view of the statement in the Bannon report that the need for such a school is now critical and the recommendation that a site be acquired and that construction should commence at the earliest opportunity.

Nora Owen

Question:

107 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education when she will provide a second level school in the Castleknock area of Dublin arising out of the recommendation for such a school in the second Bannon report.

Austin Currie

Question:

112 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the statement in the Bannon report that the need for a non-fee paying second level school in the Castleknock, Dublin 15 area, is now critical, she will ensure that the school will open in September 1994, preferably in semi-permanent buildings at Diswellstown; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 91, 107 and 112 together. I have accepted Dr. Bannon's updated report on the post-primary school needs of the Castleknock area and its recommendation that a new school should be provided.

I cannot, at this stage, give a definite time scale for the provision of a new school building as this will depend on a number of factors such as the identification and acquisition of a suitable site, the commencement and completion of the architectural planning process and finally the availability of financial resources within the postprimary schools capital programme of my Department. Every effort will be made, however, to have the new building provided as soon as possible.
It would not be feasible to provide a semi-permanent building at Diswellstown for September 1994 given the short time scale involved and that a site still has to be identified and acquired.
