Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

115 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education the number and location of school building projects at both first and second level which she sanctioned between 16 December 1993, and 25 January 1994; the extent to which the 1994 capital provision was exhausted during this period; the number of instances in respect of which such decisions represented a change from information given to Dáil Éireann during the previous Dáil session; the method by which school authorities were made aware of such decisions; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Robert Molloy

Question:

554 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of school building projects which have been approved for funding in 1994.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 115 and 554 together.

A total of 72 major projects, as set out in the following list, were recently approved under the primary capital programme for 1994. Chairpersons of the respective boards of management were notified accordingly by letter.

The projects approved were selected on the basis of objective criteria and subject to the completion of the necessary plannng and tender process, will be advanced to contract stage in a phased programme over the course of the year. Expenditure on these new projects in 1994 is estimated at £4.5 million.

In the case of second level, building projects I have sanctioned none in the period in question. I am in the process of finalising the programme of work for 1994. In this regard the Deputy will appreciate that there will be a substantial carry-over of work from the 1993 programme which I detailed to the House in reply to a question of 10 March 1994.
