Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - EC Allocation to Statistical Information.

Nora Owen

Question:

124 Mrs. Owen asked the Taoiseach the amount of the EC budget allocated to statistical information that has been allocated to Ireland; and the projects on which this has been spent.

Funding is allocated from the EU budget to National Statistical Institutes and other national bodies and persons for the provision of information and analyses to meet commission and EU statistical requirements. I can provide information only in respect of the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

In 1993 the CSO received 3,652,771 ECUs (IR£2,817,489) by way of appropriations in aid from the Commission. Some IR£90,312 related to a refund of airfares for attendance at meetings of technical working groups. The balance covered a wide range of projects in virtually all branches of statistics. The more significant receipts were in respect of:

— The annual Labour Force Survey;

— Improving the quality of GNP estimates;

— Implementation of the new statistical classification of economic activities (NACE Rev. 1);

— The organisation of surveys on products (PRODCOM);

— Restructuring of the Agriculture Statistical System;

— Development of Services Statistics; and

— The establishment of Business Registers.
