Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Retirement Statistics.

Question:

125 Mr. Burke asked the Taoiseach the number of people who retired from employment in each of the years 1992 and 1993.

The only comprehensive information available is from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) which is conducted annually in April/May.

An estimated 6,200 persons, usually resident in the State, were retired at the time of the 1991 LFS and had been at work one year previously. The corresponding estimate from the 1992 survey (the latest for which these estimates are available) was 7,900.

These estimates include persons who retired from work in another country but who subsequently made their home in Ireland. They exclude persons who were no longer resident in the State at the time of the survey and those who retired but took up work again prior to the survey.

The estimates depend on the accuracy of survey respondents' recall of their usual situation one year prior to interview.
