Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 26 Jan 1994

Vol. 437 No. 6

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Frances Fitzgerald. I call on Deputy Fitzgerald to state the matter of which she has given notice.

I seek permission to adjourn the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to debate the following urgent and important matter: In view of the decision not to renew the order under section 31 of the Broadcasting Act without a debate in this House, the manifest confusion and contradictions in the guidelines which have been issued by broadcasting authorities and the inherent contradictions in the application of section 18 of the Broadcasting Act, the recent decision to lift the order under this Act, which has allowed Sinn Féin access to the airways, should be rescinded until these matters are fully clarified to the satisfaction of the Members of Dáil Éireann.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
