Vol. 437 No. 7

Written Answers. - Maynooth (Kildare) Castle.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

65 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance when the restoration of the Geraldine Castle, Maynooth, County Kildare, will commence; if the necessary funding, planning and other such prerequisites will be put in place in sufficient time to make progress on the site in 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Development of Maynooth Castle is included in the provisional European Regional Development Fund Programme 1994-99.

In consequence of this the Commissioners of Public Works will be undertaking a detailed architectural and archaeological assessment of the national monument in 1994. Following completion of this work, and any necessary archaeological excavation, development options will be formulated and agreed with the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht. The views of relevant interested parties will of course be considered.
