Vol. 438 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers (Tax Concession) Regulations.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

53 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Finance when the revised guidelines will be announced concerning the Disabled Drivers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1989; if his attention has been drawn to the hardship of many people with multiple injuries who have not got access to the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department recently completed a comprehensive review of all aspects, including the medical criteria for qualification, of the Disabled Drivers (Tax Concessions) Regulations, 1989 which provide significant tax concessions to certain categories of qualifying disabled persons with severe mobility problems. In keeping with a longstanding commitment, I have consulted the Opposition spokespersons on the review; I recently received their comments in this regard. I am now seeking views from the principal organisations representative of disabled drivers before finalising the review process and implementing any amendments to the regulations stemming from the review's recommendations.
