Vol. 438 No. 1

Written Answers. - EU Environment Policy.

Avril Doyle

Question:

86 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for the Environment the names, nationalities and expertise of the new 32 member consultative group involved in the formulation of EU environment policy.

The European Commission set up a general consultative forum on the environment by a Commission Decision of 7 December, 1993 (O.J. No. L328/54). The decision provides for the following allocation of seats for the 32 members involved:

(a) 7-12 seats for business figures;

(b) 3-5 seats for representatives from regional and local authorities;

(c) 4-7 seats for representatives from environmental protection and consumer organisation;

(d) 1-3 seats for union representatives;

(e) 7-10 seats for figures with particular competence in the environmental field.

Appointments to the forum are a matter for the Commission, taking account of recommendations made by the above sectors. National Governments are not involved in the appointment process.

The list of members of the forum is to be published by the Commission in the Official Journal of the European Communities. A list published informally by the Commission, which includes one member of Irish nationality, has been communicated to my Department. I have arranged for this to be sent to the Deputy.
