Vol. 438 No. 2

Written Answers. - Live Register Breakdown.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

31 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give a profile of the occupations of those currently on the live register; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no comprehensive data available on the occupations of people on the live register.

In 1991 my Department began a project to collect information on occupation from new claimants for unemployment payments. At present the project is confined to computerised offices. However, as computerisation progresses, the coverage is gradually being extended.

The occupational profile of people on the live register who are covered by the project is shown in a table which will be circulated in the Official Report. However, I want to stress that these figures cover less than 40 per cent of the live register. Furthermore, the figures do not constitute a representative sample, since longer-term cases are not included, and also because non-computerised offices are not included.
