Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Enterprise and Employment Legislation.

Richard Bruton

Question:

122 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the legislation he has in preparation within his Department; the policy papers in preparation; and the new regulations that are in preparation.

Work is proceeding in my Department, at present, on the preparation of the following draft legislation: Credit Union Bill; Investment Limited Partnership Bill; Protection of Employment (Amendment) Bill; Metrology Bill; Takeover Panel (Establishment & Operations) Bill; Trademarks Bill; Competition Bill; Employment Agency (Amendment) Bill; Reduction in Insurance Costs Bill; Regulation of Insurance Intermediaries Bill; Copyright Bill; Friendly Societies (Amendment) Bill; Companies (Miscellaneous) Bill and Working Time Bill.

These are additional to the following Bills which are already before the Dáil: Consumer Credit Bill; Terms of Employment (Information) Bill; Casual Trading Bill and Apprenticeship Levy Bill.

Work is also proceeding in my Department on some 30 items of secondary legislation, most of which are for the purpose of transposing into Irish law the provisions of various European Union directives. The draft Statutory Instruments under preparation relate to the following policy areas; safety in the workplace; intellectual property; commercial agents; control of dangerous substances; insurance supervision; food labelling; company law; conformity markings; motor vehicle operating requirements; consumer protection; rental and lending rights; satellite and cable retransmission; the sale of goods and supply of services; display of Telecom price charges; and company law administration.
The preparation of policy papers is part of the normal on-going work of my Department and it would not be practicable to list every such paper which is in preparation.
