Vol. 438 No. 5

Written Answers. - Report of Task Force for the Travelling Community.

Mary Harney

Question:

51 Miss Harney asked the Minister for the Environment the action, if any, he proposes to take in relation to each of the recommendations made in the interim progress report of the Task Force for the Travelling Community.

The responsibility of my Department arising from the interim progress report relates to time recommendations on the accommodation of travellers. The recommendations take the form of a framework for a national strategy for the provision of accommodation, the provisions of which, as the report indicates, are to be developed in detail by the Task Force at a later stage. In the meantime, the recommendations are being considered in my Department in the context of the ongoing programme for the accommodation of the travelling community. Some of the recommendations are already in operation, such as 100 per cent grants for the provision of different types of accommodation, statutory schemes of letting priorities which include provision for the travelling community, special grants for travellers buying their first home, guidelines on basic design standards and consultations on the provision of caravan parks.
