259 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education, in view of the considerable and increasing pressures for post-primary school places in Lucan, she will give her Department's policy on this and provide up-to-date statistical information; if she will commission an independent study on the future requirements for second level education in Lucan, taking into account the present and projected major housing developments in the area; if she will give details on any outstanding applications for additional second level accommodation provisions from Lucan; and if she will make a statement on her strategy for dealing with the growth in demand for second level places in the area.

There are three post-primary schools in Lucan. The following statement, which I propose to circulate in the Official Report, sets out up-to-date statistical details on the post-primary and primary schools in the Lucan area.

My Department has recently received applications for grant-aid towards the provision of additional accommodation at two of the post-primary schools in Lucan — Lucan College and Colaiste Phadraig, CBS. These applications are being assessed at present.

It is not my intention at present to commission an independent study of the future requirements for second-level education in Lucan. However, my Department is carrying out a major review of Lucan and its adjoining areas to determine the short and long term post-primary requirements in the light of current primary and post-primary statistics and taking into account housing developments and other demographic indicators.
