Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Allocation of Garda Manpower.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

99 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Justice the number of Gardaí stationed in Cahir, County Tipperary; their rank; if all retirements or relocations will be replaced; the plans, if any, she has for the role and development of the station; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities, who are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda manpower to individual areas, that the present strength at Cahir station is 19. This comprises 1 superintendent, 3 sergeants and 15 gardaí, including a detective garda. Two gardaí from Cahir station retired earlier this month. However, I understand that one replacement garda will be assigned to the station later this week and it is intended to assign two further gardaí there as soon as possible, thus restoring manpower levels at the station to an overall strength of 22. The gardaí will be keeping the manpower levels at Cahir under continuing review and there are no plans to alter its status as a District Headquarters.

With regard to the development of the station, a new Garda District Headquarters has recently been completed in Cahir at a cost of approximately £575,000. This is part of the ongoing Garda building programme, to which I attach great importance. The new station has been occupied since 2 November 1993 and will be opened officially on the 25th of this month.
