Vol. 439 No. 2

Written Answers. - DCU Development Plan.

Noel Ahern

Question:

169 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the position with the allocation of development funds to Dublin City University; if she accepts the plans as approved by the Government in 1985 for £25 million development but halted in 1987; if any portion of this plan has been financed; if she will give details of allocations over the past ten years; if she will allocate capital funds to third level institutions over the next few years in addition to the recently announced EU Structural Funding.

A sum of £6 million has been included in the National Development Plan for capital developments at DCU.

It is recognised that the Government in 1985 approved an investment programme of £23 million for a Phase II development at DCU. Subsequently, however, the Government in 1987 deferred this project along with a number of other third level capital projects.

The total Exchequer capital allocation to DCU under the Department of Education Vote for the period 1983-1993 amounted to £22 million (excluding Exchequer funding made available by other Departments). A high proportion of this allocation was targeted at accommodating the expansion in student numbers since 1985. DCU's current student stock is 3,642 (full-time day) while the 1985 Phase II Plan provided for a student stock of 3,800

Further capital investment outside of the recently announced National Development Plan will be considered on an individual project basis and in the light of the outcome of the study which is at present being undertaken by the Higher Education Authority on the future development of the higher education sector in Ireland.
