Vol. 439 No. 2

Written Answers. - Proposed Community and Sports Complex.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

36 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Taoiseach the outcome of his meeting with St. Catherine's combined communities group; whether he supports the project they are developing; and if he intends to provide Government funding for the development of the project.

I am aware of the St. Catherine's combined communities group proposal for a community and sports complex in the former Player Wills building in Marrowbone Lane, Dublin.

The project is of such a scale that it impinges on the areas of responsibility of a number of Ministers. The group have had a number of meetings with the Minister for Enterprise and Employment and have been allocated a sum of £20,000 by the Minister for Social Welfare, to assist them in preparing development plans.

The group's proposals are relevant to my Department's activities in the context of the local development programme for disadvantaged areas. The group has been advised, in this context, that the best way to advance the proposal is through the Dublin inner city partnership, a structure specifically designed to act as the catalyst for local development.

In considering whether to allocate funding to a project of this nature a number of factors have to be taken into account including the long term capacity of a group to undertake and manage such a project.
