Vol. 439 No. 6

Written Answers. - National Days of Reflection.

Pat Upton

Question:

53 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, the Government has to participate in the national days of reflection to assess the future of development aid and to pursue a new vision of sustainable human development which is being organised by the Society for International Development; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The idea of a national day of reflection on development issues to be held in European donor countries was put forward last year by the Society for International Development. The society is an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to development issues; and the national day of reflection was intended as part of the preparations for a Conference of European Parliamentarians on Global Human Security which it organised in Bonn on 17-18 September 1993.

So far as I am aware no similar proposal for a national day of reflection this year has been received by my Department. If and when such a proposal is received we will consider how best to respond.
