Written Answers. - Appointment of Ambassador to Hungary.

Paul Bradford

Question:

55 Mr. Bradford asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to appoint an Ambassador, based in Budapest and fully accredited to Hungary.

John Connor

Question:

98 Mr. Connor asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has for the appointment of an ambassador based in Budapest and fully accredited to Hungary.

I propose to answer Questions No. 55 and No. 98 together.

At present, our Ambassador in Vienna is accredited, on a non-residential basis, to Hungary.

Our network of resident diplomatic missions is small and must remain so for the foreseeable future because of our limited financial resources. In the circumstances, it is not possible to envisage establishing a resident Embassy in Budapest at the present time.

I will, however, keep the matter under continuous review in the light of our national and international interests and the resources available for our diplomatic representation overseas.
