Vol. 439 No. 6

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Relations with Hong Kong.

Ivor Callely

Question:

81 Mr. Callely asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the diplomatic relationship between Ireland and Hong Kong; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Hong Kong is at present a Crown colony of the United Kingdom.

Since diplomatic relations are established between sovereign States, the question of establishing relations with Hong Kong does not therefore arise at this time.

Ireland however has maintained an Honorary Consul in Hong Kong who has provided consular services for Irish citizens in that area. The incumbent has recently retired. A new Honorary Consul will shortly be appointed in his place.
