Vol. 439 No. 6

Written Answers. - El Salvador Elections.

Nora Owen

Question:

87 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the arrangements that are in place for Ireland to assist in the forthcoming elections in El Salvador.

The Government of El Salvador has requested the United Nations to verify the elections in El Salvador. The United Nations Electoral Assistance Unit has, in turn, requested Ireland to make available two Spanish speaking electoral observers for service with the United Nations Observer Mission in El Salvador (ONUSAL) during the elections.

I have agreed to this request and arrangements to appoint the Irish observers are underway.

In addition to the two observers requested by the United Nations I am making arrangements for three members of the Oireachtas to travel to El Salvador to act as observers in association with the UN operation.
