Vol. 439 No. 6

Written Answers. - Imprisonment of Irish Citizen.

Nora Owen

Question:

88 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will in some way give assistance to a person (details supplied) who is in prison in Taiwan.

The person concerned is an Irish citizen who has pleaded guilty to transporting heroin into Taiwan. He has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

As the Deputy is aware, Ireland does not have diplomatic or consular relations with Taiwan. However, through the good offices of a local company with Irish connections, this person is being given the kind of assistance that consulates normally provide. He has had the services of a court appointed lawyer and is being visited regularly. My Department will continue to monitor this case and provide any assistance we can.
