Vol. 439 No. 6

Written Answers. - Judiciary Retirement Age.

John Ellis

Question:

108 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to reduce the retirement age for members of the judiciary to bring it into line with the retirement age in other areas of the public service; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As I have informed the House in the past, I could not undertake to outline by way of response to a parliamentary question what particular proposals I may have in mind. Any such proposals would have to be brought before the Government for approval before being announced in the usual manner.

I can however confirm that I am examining the question of introducing amending legislation to provide for a standard retirement age for members of the Judiciary and that one of the possibilities which is receiving particular consideration is that the standard retirement age for Judges should be 65.
