Vol. 440 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Sports Centre.

Richard Bruton

Question:

175 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the reason the proposal for a national sports centre was dropped.

The decision not to proceed with the National Sports Centre was taken in the context of the total overall estimated cost of the project including the expected annual operating costs of the 50 metre swimming pool complex.

In addition, circumstances had also changed in a number of relevant ways in the intervening years including the development of conference and concert facilities at other locations in Dublin, the development of the national basketball arena in Tallaght, the national badminton centre in Baldoyle and the provision of accommodation for a number of sporting organisations in the House of Sport in Walkinstown.
