Vol. 440 No. 1

Written Answers. - Funding for Repair of Historical Houses.

Michael Creed

Question:

78 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment if there is grant assistance available to meet the cost of renovations to, or repair of houses of historic importance.

There is no specific provision at present in my Department's Vote from which grants could be made for these purposes. Local authorities have discretionary powers in this area. For example, under section 14 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963 a planning authority may assist a body or person concerned with, inter alia, the preservation of buildings of historical interest. Assistance may also be available in certain cases from the Heritage Council which operates under the aegis of the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht.
