The report of the special education review committee recommended that educational provision for children with autism should continue to be made in special schools for pupils with emotional and behavioural disorders, in other types of special schools and in ordinary schools, as appropriate. The committee did not recommend the provision of a dedicated special school facility for such children.
More recently, representatives of the autistic society met with officials of my Department and again put the case for a special dedicated facility. Material presented by the society in support of their case is being examined by my Department.
