Vol. 441 No. 2

Written Answers. - Use of Inshore Fishing Grounds.

Austin Deasy

Question:

68 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for the Marine in view of the conflict between fish farmers and fishermen in Passage East, County Waterford, concerning the use of certain areas of the inshore fishing grounds, if he will have a senior official of his Department convene a meeting locally of the interested parties to regulate the situation and to see if a compromise can be reached.

I can advise the Deputy that, at my instruction, a meeting was held recently between the local interests concerned and officials of the Department and BIM. The purpose of the meeting was to review, and resolve if possible, difficulties which had emerged as to the overall compatibility of shellfish development proposals in the Passage East area.

I am advised that the meeting was constructive and has resulted in the submission of revised proposals to the Department. These proposals are now being assessed from technical and other perspectives prior to another round of public consultation with local interests and agencies. A further meeting of all concerned will be arranged with Department officials as and when necessary.
