Vol. 441 No. 2

Written Answers. - Future Use of Collins Barracks.

Ivor Callely

Question:

79 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the progress, if any, that has been made regarding the future use of Collins Barracks, Dublin; the proposals, if any, he has for its development; if so, the time schedule; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Following consideration by the Government of the future use of Collins Barracks, it was decided that a group, representive of the Departments and offices concerned and the National Museum, should examine the feasibility of providing facilities for the National Museum on the site.

In addition my colleague Deputy Michael D. Higgins, Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht, has established an interim board for the National Museum with the specific task of advising him on the future direction of the museum including, as a first priority, the Collins Barracks project. I would also like to refer the Deputy to my colleague's reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 20, 178 and 179 in the House yesterday.

As announced in the budget, £10 million has been made available in 1994 to start work on refurbishing the buildings. It is hoped to begin the first phase of the project in summer of this year.
