Vol. 441 No. 5

Written Answers. - Disabled Children Data.

Richard Bruton

Question:

30 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the number of children with a disability expected to leave school during 1994.

The information requested by the Deputy is not currently available.

The most recent data of this type available at present relates to the school year 1991-1992. In that year, a total of 11,470 children were enrolled in special schools and special classes and it is estimated that some 884 of these left the school system at the end of the year in question.
However, I should point out that the above figures include not only children with disabilities but also traveller children and children placed in young offender centres. Separate data in relation to each of these groups is not currently available.
Information on children with disabilities who were integrated into ordinary schools and may have left during the period in question, is not available.
