Vol. 441 No. 5

Written Answers. - In-Service Training Funding.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

46 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education the allocation by her Department of funds for in-service training for teachers during 1993; if she will categorise these funds into primary, secondary and third level; and in each category the number of teachers participating.

Provision for teacher in-career development at primary and second-levels in 1993 was as follows: Primary £583,000; Second-Level £1,115.000

Given the number and diversity of professional development activities for teachers, figures on the precise extent of participation are not available.

With regard to higher education institutions, a block grant for operating expenses is allowed to each institution. This grant does not allocate specific sums of money to particular activities. Staff development would be a matter for individual faculties or departments within each institution. The nature of the initiatives undertaken would be quite diverse and the number of staff participating is not available. Grants have been made available with assistance from the European Social Fund for staff development in the higher education sector under the training of trainers initiative. The amount allocated in 1993 was £630,000. The number of participants in 1992 was 1,114 and the 1993 figure is not yet available.
