Vol. 441 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grants to Sports Bodies.

Michael Creed

Question:

75 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education, in view of the lack of middle range sponsorship available to the national governing bodies of sport which have to represent Ireland in major international competitions or to host international events during 1994 due to the qualification of the Irish soccer team to compete in the 1994 World Cup finals, she will make available a once off allocation in 1994 to help these national governing bodies of sport to fulfil their sporting commitments.

The Minister of State at my Department is very much aware of the situation being faced by a number of national governing bodies of sport as they compete in international competitions abroad and host international events here at home this year. A sum in excess of £400,000 has been made available in my Department in the current year to assist national governing bodies in respect of their participation in major international competition both at home and abroad. Grants have already been allocated to a number of bodies to assist them in their international activities this year and other applications will be considered sympathetically within available resources.
