Vol. 442 No. 2

Written Answers. - Video Nasties Prosecutions.

Jim Higgins

Question:

96 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions and convictions there have been in respect of breaches of the legislation prohibiting the use or showing of video nasties.

I assume that the term "video nasties" referred to by the Deputy relates to video works which have been prohibited by the Film Censor under section 7 of the Video Recordings Act, 1989. I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the period July 1991 to February 1994, there have been 75 prosecutions brought by the gardaí for offences relating to the possession, supply, etc., of prohibited video works. Convictions were obtained in 65 cases. Details of the precise sections of the Video Recordings Act, 1989, under which the proceedings were brought, are not maintained.
