Vol. 442 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Staffing Levels.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

134 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Health the steps, if any, he is taking to improve staffing levels in the emergency and accident departments of Beaumont and other hospitals in Dublin.

I am satisfied that the accident and emergency departments of the major Dublin hospitals are adequately staffed to enable them to function effectively.

The position regarding the accident and emergency departments is monitored by my Department on an ongoing basis and in this regard, since coming into office I have provided additional funds on two occasions to enable the pressures on the accident and emergency hospitals to be eased. This was achieved through the placing of patients from the six major accident and emergency hospitals in Dublin, who were no longer in need of acute hospital care, in step-down accommodation more appropriate to their condition.
I would like to assure the Deputy of my continuing concern that the accident and emergency hospitals in Dublin are enabled to respond effectively to the demands placed upon them and that I will continue to monitor the situation with a view to taking further action if required.
