Vol. 442 No. 5

Written Answers. - Detention of Irish Citizen in UK.

Tony Gregory

Question:

84 Mr. Gregory asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has made representations to the British authorities on behalf of a person (details supplied) in a British prison; his views on whether this case may involve a miscarriage of justice; and if he will request the British authorities to transfer the person to a jail in the North of Ireland.

I am aware of the case in question and of the concerns to which it has given rise. My Department and our Embassy in London have followed developments in this case closely, including the individual's unsuccessful appeal against his conviction in 1988. An official from our embassy in London recently visited the individual to discuss his current conditions and situation. On foot of that meeting, the Embassy have taken up with the British authorities some issues of a consular nature raised by the individual, including his request for a transfer to a prison in Northern Ireland. The embassy will continue to monitor closely developments in this case.
