Vol. 442 No. 6

Written Answers. - Animal Remedies Consultative Committee.

Avril Doyle

Question:

61 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry when the consultative committee, the licensing system for wholesalers and retailers, along with Directives 90/676 and 90/677 and a labelling system for raw ingredients will be introduced as promised during the debate on the Animal Remedies Act on 22 June 1993 (details supplied); the reason these commitments made in Dáil Éireann to implement the licensing system and directives within two to three months were not honoured; when the committee will be appointed; and when it will first meet.

The necessary regulations to provide for bodies which may put forward names from which members of the animal remedies consultative committee may be chosen are at an advanced stage and will be made shortly. My Department will then seek nominations from the prescribed organisations. The committee will then be constituted and meet shortly thereafter. Draft regulations governing the other areas specified by the Deputy are also at an advanced stage of preparation within my Department. As the Deputy will be aware, the animal remedies consultative committee must be consulted prior to making these regulations.

Due to pressure of other urgent work, it has not been possible to adhere to the two to three month timescale alluded to on 22 June 1993.
