Vol. 442 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cancer Statistics.

Tony Gregory

Question:

70 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health if the incidence of cancer in the different areas of Dublin city are available to his Department; if any specific areas of the city are showing a significantly higher incidence than others; if the number of deaths from cancer are on the increase; and if the area (details supplied) shows rates above or below the average.

Data on cancer incidence is not, at present, available to my Department. However, the National Cancer Registry Board has been established to collect such data and detailed data an cancer incidence will be available in future starting from 1994.

Information on mortality by cause is published in the annual reports on vital statistics. This information is broken down to borough level. The death rate from cancer nationally and in the Dublin boroughs is as set out in the following table. As can be seen from the table there has been a gradual increase in the death rate from cancer both in Dublin and nationally.
