Question:

7 Mr. Allen asked the Taoiseach the percentage of Irish people who will be over 50 in the year 2020.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 5, 6 and 7 together.

According to the results of the 1991 Census of Population approximately 22.8 per cent of the population was aged over 50 years in April 1991 while the relevant percentage was 14.4 per cent in the case of persons aged over 60 years.

It is estimated that by the year 2021 the percentage of the population aged over 50 years will have increased to 35 per cent.

Let us now deal with questions nominated for priority.
