Vol. 442 No. 7

Written Answers. - Radiocommunications Service.

John Browne

Question:

31 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the number of European countries using the MMDS for transmitting television; and the number of stations transmitting through the MMDS in Ireland at present.

The use of MMDS for television distribution has not yet developed in European countries due to the fact that the relevant frequencies are already heavily used for other radiocommunications purposes. My Department has received requests from a number of European countries for information on MMDS in Ireland but I am not currently aware of the extent to which plans in those countries have progressed.

At present MMDS in Ireland has capacity for 11 channels, not counting RTE 1 and Network 2.
