Question:34 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications when he will sanction an extension of the national gas grid to Shannon town; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Extension of National Gas Grid.
Under the provisions of section 8 of the Gas Act, 1976, as amended, Bord Gáis require my approval for any extension of the natural gas grid. I understand that the BGE board is considering the matter but, to date, I have not received a formal application from the board. BGE has a statutory obligation to develop and maintain a system for the supply of natural gas on a commercial basis and it must assess all projects in the light of that obligation.
