Vol. 442 No. 7

Written Answers. - Radon Testing.

Michael Finucane

Question:

59 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if radon testing has been carried out in primary schools in County Limerick; if so, the number which showed a presence above accepted safety levels; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland has, at the request of the Department of Education or school authorities, carried out radon measurements in various schools in some western counties. In the case of schools, a reference level of 150 Becquerels per cubic metre has been adopted, above which remedial action to reduce the level of radon in the building should be considered. No radon measurements have been carried out in schools in County Limerick.
