Vol. 442 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Community Gardaí.

Mary Harney

Question:

21 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to appoint extra community gardaí to the Bawnogue area of Clondalkin, Dublin 22, in view of the concern expressed by residents in that area in relation to vandalism, joy-riding and other such crimes.

I am informed by the Garda authorities, that an additional two gardaí are at present being assigned to Clondalkin station, which has responsibility for the Bawnogue area. This will bring the current strength of Clondalkin Garda Station to 59, an increase of six gardaí over the 1991 strength. There are currently two community gardaí with responsibility for Community Policing duties in Bawnogue. In addition, the Bawnogue area is patrolled daily by the mobile units attached to Clondalkin station and by additional foot patrols.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that the current level of community policing in Bawnogue is adequate and they consider that the assignment of the additional gardaí to Clondalkin station will lead to an improvement in the level of patrolling and policing throughout the Clondalkin sub-District as a whole, including Bawnogue. The Garda authorities keep the position in this regard under constant review and any changes considered necessary will be made.
