Vol. 442 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - County Mayo Coastal Erosion.

Enda Kenny

Question:

43 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine if he has received representations in respect of the need for protection from coastal erosion at Inis Gé Islands, Belmullet, County Mayo, involving a wall to control the ravages of the sea at Port Mór and Glosh, a proper pier at Port Mór to replace the existing one which is now almost completely washed away by the sea and a wall on the island of Inis Gé to stop the sea from washing away the remainder of the graveyard on Inis Gé; if he has carried out an investigation of the serious effects of coastal erosion in this area; and the proposals, if any, he has to improve the position and allocate funds so that these protection works can be provided as soon as possible.

No representations have been made regarding the need for coast protection works at Inis Gé Islands, Belmullet, County Mayo, nor have any proposals been received from the local authority.

The funding available to the Department in 1994 has been allocated to a number of ongoing projects, including a dune management project being undertaken by Mayo County Council at Bertra Beach. Any submissions received in respect of requirements at Inis Gé Islands would be considered on their merits when allocating the funding available in 1995 and later years.
