Vol. 443 No. 7

Written Answers. - Refugee Status Applicant.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

77 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Justice the number of applications for refugee status received in each of the last five years; the number granted; the number rejected; and the nationality of the applicant in each case.

The information sought by the Deputy is contained in the following tabular statement. That detailed information is not readily available for the years 1989 and 1990. However, in 1989 there were 36 applications and one was granted. In 1990, there were 62 applications and one was granted. With regard to the nationalities of applicants, it is not the practice to disclose such information having regard to the confidential nature of the applications. Because the total numbers are relatively small it would be quite easy to identify individuals if nationality statistics were provided. I should add that the advice of the UNHCR on whether refugee status should be granted, has been accepted in all cases which have been finalised.
