Vol. 443 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Prison.

Michael Noonan

Question:

10 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice the reason work to be carried out at Limerick Prison in 1993 will not now proceed; if work will begin at Limerick Prison in 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the proposal to refurbish/replace the unoccupied "D" Block at Limerick Prison.

The project was incorporated into the overall plans for the refurbishment and upgrading of our existing prison facilities and the intention was to commence the work in 1994. However, as the Deputy will appreciate, there is a need to continually review these plans in the face of changing priorities and needs, and in this context, it has not proved possible to undertake the planned work in Limerick Prison in 1994. The intention still is to proceed with this project as soon as practicable and I would hope to be in a position to commence the work in 1995.

I should also like to point out that a significant capital project for the provision of new reception and laundry facilities for Limerick Prison was completed and commissioned in 1992.
