Vol. 443 No. 8

Written Answers. - Security at Court Venues.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

62 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that sufficient security exists for the protection of judges and court clerks in courthouses arising from the recent attack on a judge in Westport, County Mayo.

There are already arrangements for a full-time Garda presence in certain courthouses such as the Four Courts complex and the Special Criminal Court. In addition there is a Garda presence in all courts dealing with criminal matters and in certain civil cases.

As regards the specific incident I am informed by the Garda authorities that there was a Garda presence in the courthouse on that day and that immediate measures were taken to maintain order in the court. The question of security at court venues will continue to be kept under review.
